Newly elected Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Atiqul Islam, has vowed to make Dhaka an attractive city with modern facilities.

Atiqul unveiled his plans for the next one year, categorizing them into short, medium, and long term plans.

He outlined his plans briefing reportersat a press conference held at Bangladesh Club in Uttara on Saturday.

The plans include: transforming Dhaka into an attractive city, preventing environmental pollution, reactivating a city app, automating taxes and transactions, establishing open parks and playgrounds in localities, ensuring road safety by bringing discipline to the transport sector, and more.

Atiqul also promised to take the necessary measures to complete the projects and development work taken up by former mayor Annisul Huq.

Awami League’s nominee, Atiqul, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), won the by-election with a big margin of votes against Jatiya Party’s Shafin Ahmed as his nearest contender.

He secured 8,39,302 votes with the ‘Boat’ symbol and his nearest rival, Shafin Ahmed, bagged 52,426 votes with the ‘plough’ symbol.

Atiqul stressed the need for coordinated efforts by everyone, irrespective of party and opinion, to make Dhaka a modern city.

Atiqul said he will take necessary measures for the development of 18 new wards under his jurisdiction.

Development work of Dhaka would be taken up without considering political influence, the mayor said.

Responding to queries of journalists, the mayor said he would discuss city development work with the concerned authorities so that the work creates no public suffering.

When asked whether one year is enough time to finish the plans he unveiled, Atiqul said he started the work based on a plan and it will finish too.

He said a team is already working to remove electoral posters from the DNCC area.
