Ruling party parliamentarian Golam Maula Rony landed in jail Thursday, a day into his arrest in the capital for beating up two journalists.
A Dhaka court turned down his bail prayer and ordered authorities to send the embattled lawmaker to jail when law enforcers produced him before it in the afternoon.
Rony, a lawmaker from Patuakhali constituency-3, is the first ruling party MP to be arrested during the present government’s tenure.
On Saturday, Rony beat up Independent TV reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash (search), for the TV, at his Topkhana Road office.
He was arrested at the capital’s Baridhara on Wednesday after a metropolitan magistrate cancelled his bail and ordered his arrest in a case filed for assaulting two journalists of private satellite television channel Independent.
A day later, Rony was taken to the court from the headquarters of Detective Branch of police where he spent the whole night.
But he was kept at the court custody, not produced before courtroom.
The lawmaker’s counsel placed bail petition for him.
Saying that all the charges excepting one charges are bailable, the defence claimed that no evidence could be found in support of the other charge, attempt to murder.
Abu Jafar, the investigation officer (IO), opposed this.
The IO told the court that Rony will hamper the investigation if he remains out on bail.
After hearing both the sides, Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman rejected the bail prayer and directed police to send him to jail.
A day after the assault, Rony obtained an ad-interim bail on Sunday from a court.
On Wednesday, another cancelled the bail and ordered his arrest after complainant Yusuf Ali, assistant manager of the TV, appealed for so.
