The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), was observed in the country amid deadly blasts targeting a gathering of the Shia Muslim communities at the Husaini Dalan area in Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday.
A teenage boy, Sazzad Hossain Sanju, was killed and scores of others were injured in the bomb blasts as thousands of Shia Muslims gathered at the historic Husaini Dalan area to bring out a tazia march.
The home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, said the government is looking into the matter.
‘We are working on the matter,’ he said while visiting the spot of the deadly blasts this morning.
He also requested the Shia Muslim communities to finish all the religious rituals , such as tazia march and gathering, by 5:00pm on Saturday to avoid any further untoward incident.
The police arrested a man in connection with the blasts and took him to custody for interrogation.
The inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Hoque, confirmed the news of arrest, saying the law enforcers held the man following his suspicious movement in the area prior to the incident.
The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, denounced the bomb blasts at the Husaini Dalan area and demanded a fair and neutral investigation into the incident.
The US ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat expressed shock at the ‘senseless attack’ on the gathering of Shia Muslims.
Shia community members, however, brought out tazia march in different parts of the city as well as elsewhere in the country, leaving behind the deadly memories of explosions.
On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom in the hands of the soldiers of Yazid at the Karbala desert for the supremacy of justice and righteousness.
The day is a public holiday.
Different religious organisations and political parties chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels were airing special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
