Apologise to people if you hurt them, Quader to AL leaders

Mentioning that Awami League’s current agenda is to make people happy, its general secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday urged public representatives belonging to the party to offer apology to them for their misbehaviour, if any.

‘I ask the public representatives who misbehave and are boastful, please correct yourselves…render apology to people for misbehaviour, if any,’ he said.

He further said there is no shame in offering apology to the people who elect representatives.

Obaidul Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, was addressing a discussion organised by Awami League Dhaka south city unit at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, marking the Jail Killing Day.

Noting that they have two years in their hands before the next election, the Awami League leader said, ‘We’ll go to people and make them happy, not the leaders. It’s the present agenda of the Awami League leaders and activists.’

He also said the achievements of Sheikh Hasina and the country’s development activities cannot be held hostage due to the misbehaviour of a few people.

Citing the action taken against two BCL leaders for brandishing firearms in the city’s Gulistan area during a clash, Quader asked others to remain alert in this regard, saying similar action will be taken if anyone breaches the party discipline.

Party leaders and activists started chanting slogans amid clapping at the outset of Quader’s speech.

In reply, the ruling party leader said many chant nice slogans and deliver speeches in loud voices. ‘But they’re not available during the party’s bad time even searching by a powerful light. They escape using hidden routes. But we want to get all at the time the party needs.’

Noting that Sheikh Hasina is bigger than the party as she has huge popularity, the minister said Awami League will end up in the government if it gets weaker. ‘This won’t be a good indication for the party.’

Awami League presidium member Abdur Razzak and joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, among others, spoke at the meeting held with Awami Dhaka South city unit president Abul Hasnat in the chair.
