Emdadul on seven-day remand

Detectives arrest Emdadul Haque on Monday night in connection with the gruesome murder of 24-year-old tailor Bishwajit Das.

Emdadul Haque was placed on a seven-day remand on Tuesday hours after his arrest in connection with the gruesome murder of 24-year-old tailor Bishwajit Das.

Metropolitan Magistrate Tanbir Ahmed of Dhaka passed the order after the Detective Branch (DB) of Police produced the accused before him with a 10-day remand prayer.

In the forwarding report, the investigators said they identified Emdadul from photos and video footage of the murder scene where Shakil hacked Bishwajit with a machete on December 9 in Sutrapur of Old Dhaka.

So, the accused need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the killing and the whereabouts of their other accomplices responsible for committing such offence, the detectives argued.

He also said earlier three other accused gave their confessional statements where they disclosed the name of Emdadul and others.

Earlier, the DB arrested Emdadul at Swapnopuri Rest House in Chapainawabganj town Monday night, Gazi Rabiul Islam, assistant commissioner (media and community service) of DMP, told The Daily Star.

With Emdadul, the total number of arrestees over the killing has stood at 11.

Emdadul was brought to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media center immediately after his arrest.

Emdadul, who completed his Master’s Degree in Philosophy from Jagannath University (JnU) recently, was identified through photographs and video footage published and aired on the media, the DMP official said.

Earlier on December 23, three detained students of Jagannath University confessed to their involvement with the murder.

In their separate statements to a magistrate, the trio– Rafiqul Islam Shakil, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid and Rasheduzzaman Shaon — also said they are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

Bishwajit Das was beaten and hacked to death by a group of Chhatra League activists in Old Dhaka on December 9 during the BNP-led 18-party alliance’s countrywide road blockade.
