AL’s political death to be ensured with Mollah’s execution

Condemning the government’s decision to execute condemned prisoner and its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, Bangladesh Jamaat-e Islami on Tuesday said Awami League will ensure its political death if it kills their party leader.

In a statement, the Islamist party said the government has announced to kill Jamaat assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah at 12: 01 am on Wednesday. “It’ll be considered as the dirtiest and well-calculated political killing in the entire world, including Bangladesh, if the government executes its announcement.”

It warned that the ruling party will have to stand in the dock of history if it executes Mollah.

The party called upon the country’s people from all walks of life to create a strong resistance against the ‘brutal killing by the repressive regime’, and urged the international community, human rights bodies and the UN to be vocal against the government’s move to kill Mollah.

Mentioning that different international bodies urged the government to halt he execution of the Jamaat leader, the party alleged that the government announced to execute its plan to kill Mollah ignoring the call and concern of the local and international bodies and legal experts.

“This trail process was conducted at the government dictated plan. The government has played direct and indirect role in many ways in influencing the judges,” it alleged.

Briefing reporters at his Minto Road residence earlier on Tuesday evening, State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku said the death warrant against Mollah has already been issued and all the preparations have been taken for the execution of the apex court judgment sentencing him to capital punishment for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

All legal and procedural arrangements have been completed for the execution of the Supreme Court sentence, said State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam, adding that Mollah’s family members met him earlier in the day in the jail.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Tuesday night stayed the execution order of Abdul Quader Mollah until 10:30am Wednesday.

Chamber Judge Syed Mahmud Hossain came up with the stay order following his counsel’s appeal, claimed defence counsel Barrister Abdur Razzak.
