Ruling Awami League is taking preparations to politically tackle BNP-led 20-party alliance in the field during the upcoming anti-government movement threatened by the BNP after Eid-ul-Fitr.
“Surely, we’ll have our plan to face the so-called movement politically,” Food Minister Quamrul Islam told UNB over telephone on Friday.
He said the ruling party has the preparations to face any sort of systematic democratic movement of the opposition parties of the country. “Awami League always remains ready to face any movement.”
The minister also said that when it is about systematic democratic movement there is no question of any clash that might lead the country to destruction and anarchy.
In this connection, he said that for chalking out the plan to face the opposition BNP in the field politically, the ruling party is going to hold a joint meeting tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.
Awami League is going to hold the joint meeting with its associates, like- minded bodies and Dhaka City Awami League president and general secretary at the AL chief’s Dhanmondi office. AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam will preside over the meeting that will start at 5 pm.
But, Quamrul Islam, the joint general secretary of the Dhaka City AL, said that he does not believe BNP has the capability to wage any tough anti-government movement.
“At present, there is no scope to go beyond the systematic democratic movement. People are very much disappointed with the political party (BNP) for their destructive politics before and after the January 5 election.”
He also said that he believed BNP will not go back to that kind of destruction again as their popularity has drastically fallen after their mayhem during the election.
“Their (BNP) foreign friends, except Pakistan and its intelligence agency –ISI, also are not in favor of destructive politics,” Quamrul added.
During her post-London tour press briefing, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she wanted to see which party scores the most during the BNP-led 20-party alliance-sponsored movement.
“We’ll see who scores the most goals. Awami League and the people are ready in the field,” she told the reporters during the briefing on July 26 at her official residence Ganabhaban.
The Prime Minister also had a meeting with the leaders of the AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC) on July 28, just before the Eid-Ul-Fitr.
Sources present in the meeting said that apart from other issues, the threat of anti-government movement by the BNP-led alliance parties was also discussed.
Hasina, also the Awami League President, directed the party leaders to remain in the field for politically facing the threat.
She also asked the party leaders to drum up public support against the BNP’s movement and also portray the government’s success stories among the people so that BNP could not enforce a successful movement.
On the other hand, BNP recently formed its Dhaka city unit convening committee, headed by Mirza Abbas, to encourage the leaders and activists of the city in enforcing tough movement in the capital. Having been named as the convenor, Mirza Abbas said they would carry out a peaceful democratic movement.
