AL nominates Annisul, Khokon for DCCs mayoral race

The Awami League has nominated Annisul Huq and Sayeed Khokon as its mayoral candidates for the elections of the Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations respectively.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of the ruling party, asked Khokon, son of former Dhaka mayor Mohammad Hanif; and Annisul, former chief of BGMEA and FBCCI, to take necessary preparations for contesting the elections, said sources in Ganabhaban last night.

The DCC election has been overdue since May 2007. Before the city corporation was split in 2011, the last election was held in April 2002.

In a recent cabinet meeting at the secretariat, the prime minister directed the LGRD ministry to take necessary measures for clearing the obstacles to arrange elections for the bifurcated city corporation as soon as possible.

On February 6, at a meeting of the Awami League Central Working Committee held at Ganabhaban,  Hasina said the elections for the city corporations will be held in March.

On November 29, 2011, the government split the city corporation into two–south and north–and appointed administrators to run them.

  1. With the potential BNP or independent Mayoral candidates either arrested or in hiding, It is easy election for these candidates. If the election happened in it’s due time or during a calm atmosphere, Awami League would never win these seats. Everything reminds me of the BAKSAL days of 1975.
