AL leaders tense over Shamim shooting

The former Bangladesh Chhatra League president is one of the few student leaders close to Prime Minister and party President Sheikh Hasina.

It is not certain whether the attack on Shamim was for political or other reasons.

Shamim was made a working committee member in 2012.

He is known to be close to businessman Zainul Haque Sikder and has several businesses of his own.

One of his brothers, AKM AMinul Haque, is a director with the National Security Intelligence.

Awami League leaders said Shamim is ‘influential’, and his getting shot was making them feel insecure.

bdnews24.com spoke to several party policymakers and working committee members since the incident.

“They shot to kill (him). Shamim is living because God was with him,” a presidium member and former Chhatra League secretary said.

“The party’s in power, and a leader like Shamim is getting shot in broad daylight. What will happen to us, then?” another central leader said.

An MP, who is also a former Chhatra League leader, said the issue could be political or some other issue. “But you have to understand, this is Enamul Haque Shamim.”

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif at an event said he suspected the BNP top leadership was behind this.

Miscreants fired at Shamim, a member of Awami League’s central committee, around 9:45am on Thursday in Dhanmondi.

He told reporters he was in the front seat of his car when three people on a motorbike opened fire on him some distance from his residence.

He is now at the Combined Military Hospital.
