AL leader shot dead at Badda

Police and witnesses said several local leaders and activists of the ruling party were having chitchat when the shooting took place near Adarshanagar Pump around 9pm on Thursday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Rafikul Islam confirmed bdnews24.com the death of two.

Of the deceased, Shamsu Molla, 53, was the joint secretary of Ward-6 unit of Dhaka City Awami League.

The other dead was identified as Firoz Ahmed Manik, 45, a private hospital employee. They died at the United Hospital.

A third man admitted to the hospital was identified as Awami Swechchhasebak League’s Dhaka City (North) unit Assistant Literary Affairs Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Gama. He runs an NGO.

The person sent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with bullet wounds in his back is one Abdus Salam.

Police said they were in the dark about what caused the shooting.

Local Swechchhasebak League leader Maruf Ahmed Manik told bdnews24.com he had joined the conversation but escaped the attack since he had gone to toilet.

“They were discussing programmes to mark the National Mourning Day.

“I went to the toilet and heard the shots. I saw four of them lying bloodstained,” he added.

A witness, Dhaka City (North) Chhatra League leader Arifur Rahman, said the assailants were three to four in number.

Gama’s relative Tariqul Islam, who also witnessed the shooting, said, “They came on foot and walked away after the shooting.”

Gama’s associate Tahsir Rahman Saikat said Gama was the prime target. “They first shot Gama and then fired randomly,” he said.

Badda Police Station OC MA Jalil said police rescued the four injured and sent them to hospitals.
