AL candidates chosen

The Awami League is out with the list of its candidates for the 10th parliamentary election scheduled on Jan 5.

Party President Sheikh Hasina will contest from the Rangpur-6 and Gopalganj-3 constituencies.

Most party MPs of the Ninth Parliament will run again in the upcoming elections.

Among the new candidates are former footballer Arif Khan Joy and ex-cricketer Naimur Rahman Durjoy.

The ruling party leader in Narayanganj, Shamim Osman, has been chosen as a candidate, while former Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain has been denied a ticket this time.

AL General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam announced the names of candidates on Friday at a press conference at the party chief’s Dhanmondi office.

The party’s Parliamentary Board finalised the candidates for 297 constituencies during its two-day meeting – presided over by Sheikh Hasina – that began on Wednesday.

The Awami League had contested in 264 constituencies in the last elections.Senior leader Tofail Ahmed said that Awami League finalised its candidates for 297 seats but added that seat-sharing talks would be held with the constituents of the 14-party alliance.

Dec 2 is the last day of filing nomination papers, according to the poll schedule. That means the Awami League will have to come to an understanding with its allies about its candidate selection by Monday.
