AL, BNP, JP submit audit reports to EC

The Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party submitted their annual reports on income and expenditure of 2012 to the Election Commission (EC) Wednesday.

The ruling party, however, refused to disclose details of its report.

AL Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das told the reporters that the report was submitted in confidence with the EC and it was up to the commission to publish details of the statement.

On contact, EC Secretary Dr M Sadik said the commission is scheduled to hold a meeting at 3:30pm Wednesday to decide on whether to publish the report.

Meanwhile, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi submitted a statement of Tk 1,79,12,231 in income and Tk 2,26,93,143 in expenditure of behalf of the party.

The report showed donations from the party’s members of the parliament and fees from leaders and activists from all levels as the main source of income.

Political programmes, birth and death anniversaries of Ziaur Rahman and events organised on the national days were the sectors for major expenditures, Rizvi said.

Former minister and Jatiya Party presidium member Tajul Islam Choudhury submitted the party’s statement, showing Tk 4,81,70,000 in income and Tk 4,90,00,000 in expenditure.

The EC Secretariat issued letters to the political parties on July 11 to submit their reports within the deadline on July 31.

Fifteen of 38 registered political parties submitted their annual reports on income and expenditure of 2012 to the Election Commission till Tuesday.

As per the Representation of the People Order, all the registered political parties are supposed to have audited their last year’s income and expenditure and to submit reports between January and July.

The EC Secretariat issued letters to the political parties on July 11 asking them to submit their reports within the deadline.
