AL-backed syndicate jacking up prices of essentials: BNP

The BNP has alleged that the prices of essential commodities have gone up during Ramadan due to the ‘manipulation’ by a syndicate of ruling party-backed businessmen.

“The government has increased the prices of commodities during the month of Ramadan instead of checking them,” Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on Wednesday.

He said eggplant was selling at Tk 105 to 110 a kg, green chilli at more than Tk 100 per kg, garlic at Tk 120 a kg and ginger Tk 200 per kg.

“All essentials are now beyond the reach of the middle and lower-income groups,” Rizvi said.

Rizvi said the syndicate was controlling the prices and they were blessed by the ‘illegal government’.”

The BNP leader said the government had provided an opportunity for law enforcers to make quick money before Eid by filing cases and arresting his party leaders and activists.

He alleged the government was implicating the BNP leaders and activists in false cases as it was scared of agitation to be launched by the party after Eid.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia had earlier announced that they would start a vigorous movement after Eid to force the government to hold a parliamentary election.

Rizvi said the government would not be able to suppress the people through intimidation.
