President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday asked the authorities of Bangladesh Television (BTV) to air programmes keeping in mind the viewers’ demand.
“The present time has been progressing through competition. Many TV channels are running their activities to ensure free flow of information and entertainment. BTV will have to take programmes keeping the demand of audience in mind, ensuring that the spirit of the country’s independence remains ever bright,” he said.
The President made the observations while addressing a programme, marking the occasion of state-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) stepping into 50 years, at Shaheed Manirul Alam Auditorium of BTV at Rampura in the city.
Abdul Hamid said: “The outcome of government activities emphasizing people’s hope and aspirations have to be reached to all. I hope, BTV will telecast more standard and entertaining programmes respecting the viewers demand.”
He said BTV will have to take their work forward by showing responsibility to country’s culture and civilization. Through such measures, BTV will be able to maintain its acceptability as a medium of free flow of information and entertainment apart from preserving history, tradition and culture.
Terming BTV a national pride, the President said the channel has been working untiringly to build a digital Bangladesh. “The role of BTV in nurturing country’s language, literature and cultural tradition is praiseworthy.”
He said that from its beginning in 1964, BTV has acquired dependability and acceptability of the viewers. This was possible through the teamwork of all concerned people as well as creativity and devotion.
“BTV has been playing important role in the socio-economic development of the country by broadcasting objective news apart from its educational and entertainment programmes.”
Abdul Hamid said that in the age of satellite culture, television is one of the medium of entertainment and information. People sitting in the drawing room are getting the scope to get news from all corners of the world.
“Since its inception, BTV is telecasting news and programmes highlighting country’s culture, language, liberation war, health and education, and other issues,” he added.
Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, Information secretary Mortuza Ahmed, BTV’s Director General M Hamid and former DG Jamil Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
