The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday petitioned a Dhaka court, seeking 10 days for interrogating Awami League MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case filed on charges of accumulating illegal wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ataul Haque fixed October 26 for a hearing on the petition filed by the anti-graft body’s Deputy Director Manjur Morshed.

On August 21, the ACC filed this case against Bodi with Ramna police. Around one and a half months later on October 12, the sitting MP surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail, but was refused and sent to jail on that day.

Four days later, another court denied bail to Bodi after a hearing on a petition the defence had filed challenging the bail plea rejection order of the previous court.

According to the First Information Report, he informed the anti-graft body on March 20 that he and his wife and children’s movable and immovable assets were worth Tk 5.20 crore. But his income tax returns showed that his assets alone were worth Tk 16.06 crore till June 30 last year.

In his wealth statement, Bodi stated that he does import business and that is his lone source of income.

However, when investigators sought the documents over his loss and profits from the business he could not furnish them with any. The anti-graft body alleged that Bodi has hidden assets worth over Tk 10 crore.

In last January, the ACC initiated an inquiry into the corruptions of seven ruling party leaders, ministers and state ministers committed during the immediate past tenure of the Awami League-formed government.

About the investigation into a meteoric rise in his wealth, he said that the allegations against him were baseless.

In February, Bodi challenged the ACC that he would step down as MP if investigators could prove that he had laundered even a single penny abroad or concealed any piece of information about his wealth.
