The move came after DIG Mizanur said the ACC director took a bribe from him in exchange for information

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has temporarily suspended its director Khandaker Enamul Basir for leaking a probe report to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Mizanur Rahman, who faces allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmood made the disclosure at a press briefing at the anti-graft agency’s Headquarters in Dhaka on Monday.

“The suspension order against him comes as a disciplinary action for disclosing a probe report,” he said.

The order came a day after DIG Mizanur Rahman made an allegation to the media that ACC director, Enamul Basir, accepted Tk40 lakh in bribes in two phases in exchange for information.

The ACC launched a probe into the wealth of DIG Mizanur after he was relieved of duties last year following allegations of torturing a woman.

Enamul Basir was a member of the ACC probe team that investigated the DIG’s wealth.

Apart from the suspension order, the commission also removed him from the probe team. A separate departmental investigation will be conducted in connection with the bribery allegations, said Mahmood.

However, contacted, ACC Public Relations Officer (PRO) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said he did not know anything about the departmental inquiry as of 6pm on Monday.

Contacted over the phone, suspended ACC Director Khandaker Enamul Basir denied all allegations against him.

He also said the mobile phone conversation with DIG Mizanur Rahman, which was broadcast by a private television channel, is fabricated.

On the other hand, when contacted, DIG Mizanur Rahman said: “I gave the money after being pressured by the ACC investigator.

“I was seeking help from the ACC and I hope they will help me lawfully now,” he added.

The DIG also welcomed ACC’s decision to suspend Basir and to withdraw him from investigating his case.
