The Anti Corruption Commission on Wednesday arrested Moon Group of Industries chairman Mizanur Rahman on charge of embezzling money of the state-run Agrani Bank Limited.

Mizan was arrested from capital’s Dhanmondi area around 8:00pm.

ACC deputy director (public relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told the Prothom Alo that allegations have it that Mizan misappropriated Tk 220 crore after taking loan from Agrani Bank for constructing a building called ‘Mizan Tower’ on a litigated plot of land in capital’s Kalyanpur.

The ACC filed a case against five people including Agrani Bank MD Syed Abdul Hamid, DMD Mizanur Rahman Khan and Moon Group chairman Mizanur Rahman on 30 June.

Following the case, the Bangladesh Bank has removed the Agrani Bank MD Syed Abdul Hamid from his position for reported misuse of power and the bank’s deputy managing director Mizanur Rahman Khan took the charge as the acting MD of the bank.

But just few hours after he took the charge following the removal of Syed Abdul Hamid, Mizanur Rahman was arrested along with bank’s deputy general manager Md Akhterul Alam and assistant general manager Md Shafiullah.

The central bank’s standing committee made the recommendation for removing Syed Abdul Hamid since, the committee found, he misused power in disbursing loans amounting to Tk 792 crore and violated relevant rules.

Mizanur Rahman Khan, however, got bail on 4 August.
