South Asian Summit on achieving SDGs to start in Dhaka on Jan 30

A two-day South Asian Speakers’ Summit on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is going to start on January 30 in Dhaka.

The Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) and Bangladesh Parliament and Washington-based organisation Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) are jointly arranging the two-day summit at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.

IPU President Saber Hossain Chowdhury briefed reporters on Monday about the summit at the HR Bhaban in the city’s Kakrail area.

Speakers along with respective parliamentary delegation from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka will joint the summit, Saber Hossain said.

Alongside, representatives from different international organizations, including Canadian Cancer Society, American Cancer Society, IPU, UNDP, ESCAP, CTFK, WHO and Thai Health Promotion, will be present in the two-day conference as discussants, he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will deliver the concluding speech of the summit, informed Saber Hossain.

The summit will focus on five issues like importance of SDGs for the South Asian region, role of Parliaments in implementation of SDG and review of its implementation progress, global health and well-being goals of SDGs, controlling tobacco epidemic and strategy and policy for controlling the use of tobacco in the South Asian countries, he said.

The summit will develop a national and regional roadmap to help parliaments periodically assess national and regional progress on tobacco control, the IPU president said.
