Indian co to hold wind power feasibility study

Dhaka, Feb 12 (bdnews24.com) – The government has signed a memorandum of understanding with an Indian firm for a feasibility study on the development of wind-power plants in five districts in Bangladesh.

The Indian firm ReGen Powertech will experimentally set up a 15megawatt power plant if the study is successful.

Deputy secretary (renewable energy) of the Power Development Board (PDB) Mohammad Alauddin and ReGen Powertech managing director Madhusudan Khemka signed the deal at the Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday.

State minister for power Mohammad Enamul Haque at the function said that wind power was one of the renewable energy sources and it was possible to set up lost-cost power plants using wind power.

He said the government had been attaching importance to the development of renewable energy and added, “The initiative to carry out the feasibility study is being done from this perspective.”

Deputy secretary Alauddin said under the MoU, the feasibility study will be conducted for a year at Muhuridam in Feni district, Anwara in Chittagong district, Kuakata in Patuakhali district, Khepuparha in Barguna district and in Cox’s Bazar district.

Prime minister’s energy adviser Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, power secretary Abul Kalam Azad and PDB chairman A S M Alamgir Kabir were present at the function.

The government had also undertook a feasibility study on generating wind power in the coastal areas of Kutubdia and Feni, but things have not moved any further from there.
