A little over 69 percent students in the country did not take part in television, radio and online based distance learning programmes during the coronavirus pandemic, a study says.

Mostafizur Rahman, a member of Education Watch, unveiled the study findings during a virtual programme held by Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE).

The study was conducted among 2,992 individuals. Of them, 1,709 are students of primary and high schools, 578 are teachers, and 576 guardians.

Of the students, 57.90 percent have been deprived of education due to lack of necessary device and 16.50 percent did not take part as they were not drawn to distance learning programmes, Mostafizur said.

Seventy-five percent students who participated in the research expressed their desire to return to their classrooms soon. Seventy-six percent guardians opined for reopening schools as soon as possible, he said.

According to CAMPE, schools should be reopened in phases following health guidelines and the government should come up with the announcement soon.

They said, primarily, the authorities should reopen classes 10 to 12 and later the education programme of classes 4-5.
