5 killed in road crashes in 3 dists

Five people, including a couple, were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Jamalpur, Chuadanga,  Moulvibazar and Sirajganj districts on Thursday and Friday.

 

In Jamalpur, three people, including a couple, were killed and the couple’s two children injured as a train crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Chandra level crossing in the district town on Friday noon.

 

The deceased were identified as Mahbubul Alam Dal, 45, his wife Akhter Jahan Bithi, 35, and three-wheeler driver Abdur Razzak, 55. They hailed from Poyla village in Melandah upazila.

 

Witnesses said the Dewanganj-bound ‘Teesta Express’ from Dhaka ran into the auto-rickshaw at the level crossing while it was passing the rail tracks, leaving Dal and Razzak dead on the spot and three auto-rickshaw passengers injured.

 

Bithi succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital.

 

The couple’s two daughters — Jinia, 10, and Minia, 4 – were first whisked off to Jamalpur General Hospital and later they were shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital following deterioration of their condition.

 

A case was filed with Jamalpur Railway Police Station in this regard.

 

In Chuadanga, a three-year-old boy was crushed under the wheels of a power tiller at Napitkhali village in Damurhuda upazila on Friday.

 

The victim was identified as Habibullah, son of Mizanur Rahman of the village.

 

Witnesses said Habibullah received injuries as he fell off the earth-laden power tiller and was run over by it at about 11am when his father along with him was returning home.

 

Habibullah died on the way to Hospital.

 

In Moulvibazar, a woman was killed and her four family members were injured as a running private car ploughed through their house at Shamshernagar in Kamalganj upazila on Thursday night.

 

The victim is Parveen Begum, 35, of the area.

 

Police said the private car ploughed across the house of Faruk Ahmed in the area at about 10:30 pm after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving five members of the family injured.

 

The five injured were admitted to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital where Parveen succumbed to her injuries at about 12:10am on Friday.

 

In Sirajganj, at least five cops of Tarash Police Station were injured as a pickup carrying them plunged into a roadside ditch after one of its tyres got disjointed at Khalkula in Tarash upazila on Thursday afternoon.

 

The injured include officer-in-charge Abdur Rafique, Inspector (investigative) Shamsul Islam and sub-inspector Mustafizur Rahman.
