40 fishermen kidnapped in Sundarbans; 15 hurt

Robbers kidnapped 40 fishermen along with 10 trawlers at Katka in the Sundarbans under Sharankhola upazila of the district on Monday.

 

Coast Guard Mongla zone operation division staff officer Lt Commander M Mohiuddin Majumder said gang members belonging to notorious ‘Rahman Bahini’ and ‘Jahangir Bahini’ swooped on the trawlers while the fishermen  were fishing in the early morning.

 

The gang members looted fish and nets worth about Tk 1 crore from 50 trawlers and kidnapped 40 fishermen along with 10 fishing trawlers. They demanded Tk 50,000 for release of each fisherman, he said.

 

The robbers stabbed 15 fishermen and threw four of them into the sea.

 

Later, Coast Guard members rescued the four fishermen and sent them to hospital.

 

Soon after the incident, Coast Guard members started drive in different areas including Katka, Kachikhali, Narikelbaria and Dimerchar but the kidnapped fishermen couldn’t be till Monday afternoon.

 

Meanwhile, a fisherman was killed and four others were injured in an attack by pirates in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday. Besides, Another fisherman was shot dead  and eight others received bullet wounds in an attack by robbers at Raimangal in the Sundarbans on February 7.
