4 opposition men killed in violence: Fakhrul

Agitation announcement in the evening

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Star Online Report

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir claimed that four activists of the 18-party alliance were killed and 600 injured during the 18-party alliance’s countrywide road blockade on Sunday.

Around 440 opposition men were arrested across the country and of them, 215 were detained in the capital, Fakhrul said while addressing a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital after the road blockade ended at 2:00pm.

Of the total injuries, 470 were injured only in Dhaka, he claimed.

According to him, three of 18-party activists — Afjalur Rahman of Kishoreganj, Bishwajit Das of Dhaka, Wares Ali of Sirajganj — were killed in separate incidents during the blockade.

Another BNP man was ran over by a vehicle near the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital during a clash with ‘the ruling party activists’, Fakhrul said.

He however could not mention the name of the dead victim immediately.

The BNP leader further claimed that public spontaneously took part in the blockade programme across the country.

He said the ruling party men attacked numerous opposition supporters during the blockade.

But the success of the blockade programme proved that the government will have to fulfil the ‘public demand’ for restoring of the caretaker government system.

The BNP acting secretary general also said they will announce a programme later in the day protesting the government and police attacks on the opposition activists.

Earlier in the morning, Fakrhul claimed that the activists of the 18-party alliance were not involved with the countrywide violence.

He further claimed that the agents of the government are committing the violence that includes arson, vandalism and clash.
