The accident took place on the Dhaka-Barisal highway at Ghatakchar on Sunday.

Madaripur police superintendent Khondkar Faridul Islam initially said six people had died but later corrected the figure.

“We have recovered three bodies,” he said. “Our preliminary information of six people being killed was incorrect.”

He said a ‘Sugandha Paribahan’ bus was on its way to Dhaka from Barisal when the mishap occurred.

Around 1:145pm, the driver lost control of the vehicle and a hit a roadside tree before falling into a ditch.

Two were killed on the spot and two others died on their way to hospital, Islam said.

Police identified one of the victims as Bhanu Ghosh, 50, hailing from Madaripur’s Bazitpur village.

Other three are yet to be identified.

Madaripur Sadar Hospital’s doctor Siddiqur Rahman said 35 people, injured in the accident, had been admitted there.

Ten of them were sent to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital after their condition deteriorated, he said.
