Unidentified miscreants hurled four bombs at the house of Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Darus Salam Road in Mirpur Saturday afternoon.
“We’re not hurt but the bombs, which were very powerful, caused a lot of damage here at our house,” an official of information ministry quoted Afroza Haq Rina, the minister’s wife, as saying.
Inu was not at home during the incident, Mir Akram U Ahmed, public relations officer of information ministry, told The Daily Star over phone.
Quoting the minister’s wife, Ahmed said the bombs were thrown at the house located at 137, Darus Salam Road around 1:15pm when several members of the family were at home.
“It’s a joint family. The minister lives there with his close kins, including his siblings, son and daughter-in-law,” he added.
After the attack, the minister himself called Inspector General of Police, Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, seeking steps in this regard, Ahmed said.
Inu has blamed Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, for the attack, private television channels report.
The information ministry in a press release said ‘powerful bombs or grenades’ were blasted at the house of the minister.
“Though the attacks caused massive damage to the house but no one was injured,” it added.
Quoting the minister’s wife, the press release said at least four powerful bombs were hurled.
Of the six-storey building, Inu uses the ground floor as his office and the first floor as residence, the family sources said.
His sister resides on the second floor where the bombs hit and the family of Inu’s deceased brother lives on the third floor while the forth and firth floors have been rented out to other families.
