Boats to be sent back after the weather becomes favorable, says Coast Guard

Some 32 Indian fishing boats, with 519 fishermen on-board, have drifted into Bangladesh’s maritime territory, reportedly due to strong waves, and stormy weather.

The boats are now waiting at the Rabnabad channel, near Payra sea port at Patuakhali, to get back to Indian territorial waters, The Detective Branch of Bangladesh Coast Guard said in a statement on Monday.

“The boats and fishermen are safe now. They will be sent back into the Indian maritime boundary when the weather becomes favorable,” Bangladesh Coast Guard Assistant Director M Hamidul Islam.

“The Indian Coast Guard has been informed in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between India, and Bangladesh,” he added.
