30 hurt in Gazipur clash

GAZIPUR

At least 30 people, including one with bullet, were injured on Saturday in a series of clashes between the supporters of Awami League-supported chairman candidate and its rebel candidate in the election to Sreepur upazila of the district.

 

Al Amin, a local Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, suffered bullet wound during the clash.

 

He was first admitted to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex where doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

 

Witnesses said supporters of both AL candidate Iqbal Hossain Sobuj, also organizing secretary of the party district unit, and rebel candidate Abdul Jalil gathered in front of AL Sreepur upazila office in the morning.

 

Men of the duo later brought out separate processions in the area around 11 am.

 

At one stage, both groups locked in a fierce clash that continued till 2 pm.

 

Chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and over 20 gun-shots were fired during the clashes, leaving at least 30 people, including Al Amin, injured.

 

Police also had to fire rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

 

Six motorcycles and one micro-bus were also vandalised during the clash.

 

Following the clash, a tense situation is prevailing in the area.  To avert further trouble, additional police have been deployed.

 

The upazila will go to polls on March 15.
