3 Other Murderers

Through interviewing eyewitnesses, The Daily Star has learnt the identities of three more Chhatra League activists who were involved in the killing of Bishwajit Das.

Earlier on Tuesday, this paper published a story headlined “Of The Murderers,” identifying five BCL cadres of Jagannath University (JnU) who directly took part in the murder of the 24-year-old tailor.

The three identified yesterday are all fourth-year students at JnU. They along with the group of 10-12 BCL cadres swooped on Bishwajit with sticks, iron rods and machetes around 9:00am on Sunday when he was walking to his work, witnesses told this correspondent.

“Bishwajit was bleeding profusely. And when some people tried to stop the attackers, they said Bishwajit was a Shibir activist. Bishwajit then told them, ‘brother I am not a Shibir man. I am Hindu, I am Hindu.’ But his voice was so feeble and the killers continued beating and hacking him,” said Anisul, a roadside vendor.

In the last three years, these unruly Chhatra League men committed various crimes, including extortion, mugging and stalking female students of the university. But thanks to their connection with the ruling Awami League, police never took any action against them.

The trio could not be contacted for their comments.

  1. I am a freedom fighter and I was the first one to be terminated from my service by none other than Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then the Prime Minister and Defence Minister. I was forced to flee the country in the face of Direct threat to my life by none other that Kamal, who always addressed me as “Sir” prior to the threat. Thousands have been murdered by the ruling parties and their cadre in the student world of Bangladesh. Today, I know I wasted my valuable time fighting in the War, which never ushered in the liberty we craved for during the Pakistani murderers reign. No wonder the same killing gusto is continuing under AL.

  2. How sad! Violence, cruelty, thuggery and lawlessness, thy name is Awami League.
It may sound a little unpalatable but if truthful history is any guide than one can make an unstinted claim that the seeds of Bangladesh’s moral slide, tempering of its democracy, abuse of basic human rights, use of violence as a tool of tackling political opponents etc. were sown by none other than Sk. Mujibur Rahman, the first Primie Minister of the country.
