3 Jamaat leaders jailed for contempt of court

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Sunday jailed three Jamaat leaders — party acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan, Habibur Rahman Azad, MP and Selim Uddin — for contempt of court charge.

Of them, Rafiqul Islam and Azad, now on the run, were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in absentia and fined Tk 3,000 each, in default, to suffer two months more in jail.

The other convict, party’s Dhaka city unit assistant secretary, Selim, now on bail, was jailed till rising of the tribunal as he was in the dock. Selim was also fined Tk 1,000, in default, to suffer in jail for two weeks.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan, punished the trio for the offence of ‘provocative and derogatory’ remarks against the tribunal on February 4 at a party rally.
