Ershad to take part in election campaign for JaPa candidates

In the second phase, the Election Commission will hold polls to 684 union parishads across the country.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Jatiya Party (JaPa) Hossain Mohammad Ershad said he would participate in the election campaign in favour of his party’s candidates.

He said: “What is happening in the name of union parishad election is not democracy. If I take part in the election campaign all the Jatiya Party candidates will won in the UP polls.”

Chief of the JaPa made the remarks while addressing a rally at Darshana in Rangpur yesterday.

He said many Jatiya Party candidates could not submit nomination papers. “This time, 70 Awami League candidates were elected unopposed which is unprecedented.”

The Election Commision will hold the UP polls in six phases. The third phase of the polls will be held on April 23, fourth phase on May 7, fifth phase on May 28, and the final phase on June 4.

Polls will be held to 711 union parishads in third phase, 728 union parishads in fourth phase, 714 union parishads in fifth phase, and to 660 union parishad in the sixth phase.

The first phase of the election to 739 union parishad was held on March 22.

Awami League activist killed in Gazipur

An Awami League activist was killed at Kolapotua village, Jamalpur upazila, Gazipur yesterday.

Deceased Chittaranjon Shil, 45, was a supporter of Awami League rebel candidate Khairul Alam.

Anjana Rani, wife of Chittaranjon, told the Dhaka Tribune that some people had come to their house on Saturday morning and assaulted her husband. They filed a general dairy in connection with the assault.

“He went out of the house on Saturday night and did not return home. Later, we found the body of him which was hanging in a tree adjacent to our house,” she said.

Officer-in-Charge of Jamalpur police station Mustafizur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that he might have commit suicide over family feud.
