A total of 2496 expatriate workers have died while working abroad in 2013.

Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain reported the deaths of these expats at a press briefing in the capital on Wednesday.

These deaths were all recorded in 2013, and according to the minister, 786 of these deaths were considered unnatural.

It is stipulated that the reason behind most of these deaths are stress. The workers become obsessed with earning money to make up for the cost of migrating abroad, so many of them work to the point of collapse.

With the death tolls high, the government has launched an initiative to improve the situation. Workers are chosen at random from an official database and sent abroad under government supervision at surprisingly low costs.

Under the new government management, workers can travel to places like Saudi Arabia for as little as Tk17, 000 or to Malaysia for Tk27, 000. These trips would have set them back a several lakhs just a few years ago.

The government are providing a prompt and efficient response to the situation before it gets out of hand. All things considered, with a staggering total of 8.7m Bangladeshi workers abroad, a death rate of 2496 is not all that high.
