BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Tuesday the Awami League government has broken all records in pardoning death-row convicts from being hanged.

“During the present government’s rule, the highest number of prisoners sentenced to death, involved with AL politics, was given presidential clemency,” said the BNP leader while speaking at a press conference today, Tuesday, at BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan.

Rizvi said statistics show that from independence till now, 25 persons sentenced to death were accorded presidential pardon. “Of them, 22 were pardoned during the rule of this illegal government installed through a voter-less election.”

The BNP leader said the exemption of AL leader Abu Taher’s son from execution had created a countrywide sensation as he had been sentenced to death for the murder to Laxmipur BNP leader Nurul Islam.

When 20 persons condemned in the sensational Gama murder case of Natore were pardoned, they were accorded a reception and garlanded by AL leaders. The killers of Natore BNP leader and upazila chairman Sanaullah Noor were pardoned and now carry out a reign of terror in the area.

Refuting rumours of a conspiracy between Israel intelligence Mossad and BNP joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury to overthrow the AL government, Rizvi said it is the people that will topple the government.

“BNP did not believe in conspiracies. A government without public support can fall anytime and this government’s end was near.”

Rizvi went on to say, “BNP is supported by the people while AL has become detached from the public. We repeatedly call for Sheikh Hasina to step down and for a caretaker government to be installed.

It will then be seen which party is actually popular. Allegations that BNP is involved in international conspiracy are false and unfounded.”
