A court in Comilla has sentenced two men to death for the rape and murder of a girl child in 2010.
The Comilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jesmin Ara announced the verdict on Thursday. The convicts were also fined Tk 100,000 each.
The convicts are Abdur Rashid, 35, and Bashir Ahmed, 37. Both of them are from Debidwar’s Narayanpur village.
Prosecution lawyer Nishat Salauddin said that on June 16, 2010, a female student of class III went to her neighbour’s house at Debdwar’s Narayanpur village and never returned. After searching the area her body was found in the bushes near her house.
After the incident, the people involved in the killing spread the rumour that a ‘genie’ had killed the girl. Just as they were trying to hasten the girl’s burial process, a local Village Defence Party (VDP) officer named Raza Miah informed Debidwar’s Police Station about the incident.
The police then seized the body and sent it to Comilla Medical College Hospital for a post mortem. The results revealed that the girl was raped.
Afterwards police arrested Abdur Rashid and Bashir Ahmed for suspicious behaviour. The police then filed a case against them after concluding their investigation.
Nishat Salauddin said that the accused were awarded capital punishment by the court after hearing deposition of 14 witnesses and the confessionary statements of the accused.
After the judgment, the girl’s father told journalists, “I hope the death sentence is implemented as soon as possible.”
