18-party calls countrywide hartal for Sunday

News - 18-party calls countrywide hartal for Sunday
The BNP-led 18-party alliance on Friday called a nationwide daylong hartal for Sunday demanding restoration of the caretaker government system, release of its arrested leaders and activists and withdrawal of the ban on meetings and processions.

BNP Chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu announced the shutdown call at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office at noon.

Reiterating their demand for holding next general election under a non-partisan neutral government, he also threatened to settle the issue on the street if the government doesn’t arrange a dialogue on the polls-time government.

“We want talks on the caretaker government administration. If you do not hold any dialogue, the issue will be settled on the street,” Dudu added.

Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s comments on former advisers to the caretaker government, Dudu said, “I think the prime minister is intelligent. She hailed Akbar Ali Khan when he resigned from the post of adviser and wished to cook food for him. What happened within this couple of years that you (Hasina) became so hard on him?”

Dudu asked the Prime Minister whether she has forgotten what she did for restoration of the caretaker government system. “Did you forget how many days you have enforced hartal for caretaker government?”
