Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq has said some 1,500 trucks of sand would be needed to fill up the ground hole developed near Hotel Sundarban due to the piling work of a high-rise building.

The mayor disclosed this information while addressing a press meet over the road collapse near the city hotel that prompted its evacuation.

The mayor said: “1,500 trucks of sand will be needed to fill up the ground hole developed in the areas around the construction site, and it will take two days to complete the whole process.

Noting that three big cracks have developed in the areas around the construction site of the NBL high-rise building, Annisul said: “I along with Fakhrul Amin, a structure expert from Buet, visited the entire area and noticed the cracks, which have been estimated to be very risky.

“But an expert team of the Army has already visited the scene and monitored the filling up work. Hopefully we will come out of the critical situation in a short time.”

“The next course of action will be fixed once the filling up work is completed. Action against those responsible will be taken after an investigation.”

Earlier in the day, the hotel was evacuated following an adjacent road collapse.

The authorities concerned restricted all types of vehicular movement on the road in front of the building, said Kamrul.

They also took immediate steps in filling up the subsided land. The effort was underway till filing of this report at 2:30pm.

Annisul Huq visited the spot at around 10:45am immediately after he received news of the incident.

He said: “We are estimating that the area belongs to Dhaka South. But, it doesn’t matter whether it belongs to Dhaka North or South. I have found the area very risky and now its our main duty to make the area safe for people.”
