A man was killed and at least five were injured as two containers of a freight train fell on a slum near the rail tracks in Banani area of the capital on Thursday.

Deceased Mojibur Rahman, 45, was a rickshaw-puller.

The accident occurred around the noon when the train was heading towards Chittagong from Kamalapur Rail Station. Two containers skidded off from the train near Sainik Club in Chairmanbari area of Banani, witnesses said.

The accident might be caused due to a mechanical error in clamping the containers with the train, said Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kafrul Police Station.

The injured have been undergoing treatment at Combined Military hospital (CMH), said Khandaker Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner of Gulshan division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

On information, army personnel rushed to the scene and started to remove the containers from the slum.

Rail movements however remain normal as another rail track beside the affected one is kept open.
