DHAKA:One person died after falling from a roof during police raid on a multi-storied building in capital’s Bijoynagar area on Friday when law enforcers foiled a bid by some Islamist parties to stage demonstration in nearby Baitul Mukarram mosque after Jumma prayers.
Police mounted heavy security around the national mosque and screened people at all connecting roads as they arrived for the weekly prayers. In the process of security checks at Motshabhaban, Segun Bagicha, Press Club and Paltan and Dainik Bangla intersections, around 100 people were detained by law enforcers as suspected demonstrators.
The unidentified man jumped to death in apparent bid to escape police arrest during the raid for suspected trouble makers allegedly hiding inside the building. Police later detained 29 people from the building.
Armed law enforcers including RAB were deployed outside the shut northern gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque where a group of Islamist parties earlier announced to hold the demonstrations to protest recent incidents of mob violence and police firings that claimed about 100 lives nationwide.
The demonstration could not be held due to strong police presence.
But nearby Fakirapul area, a small group of suspected Jamaat-Shibir activists exploded several cocktails outside a local mosque after Jumma prayers causing brief panic. Police quickly moved in and fired blank shots to disperse the protesters.
Earlier on February 27, Islamic parties, excluding Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, announced to hold a grand rally in front of north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on March 8.
